Reupholstered rocking chair

This past weekend I took on a project that I have been wanting to do for so long.
It was finally time to do something with the hand me down rocking chair that Adrian's mother had given us two years ago.
It was ripped, stained, and pink plaid.

I spent Friday afternoon removing what seemed like millions of staples.
And lots of these razor sharp tack strips too.
Sharp things scare me. I closed my eyes as I pulled each one out. Then realized I should probably keep my eyes open if I wanted to avoid being cut.

My chair sat completely naked all day Saturday while I cut out the new fabric.

I had to get her covered, and fast, because the only thing uglier than stained, ripped up, pink plaid is spongy, yellow, upholstery foam.
That is the point where I had to deal with the really scary stuff like sewing new welting and a zipper!
It was the first time I'd ever even tried sewing welting or a zipper, but just like button holes, it turns out that they really are pretty easy.
I just had to take it one step at a time. Otherwise the whole project made me feel overwhelmed.

It all came together in the end, and I love our "new" chair!

Wow! I am so impressed! Now...is this something that you just did some research on and then decided to tackle it, or did you already have a working knowledge of reupholstering furniture? I have daydreamed about reupholstering different chairs in our home - and even a sofa - but it intimidates me, too.

Your chair looks SO GREAT!! =-D

Wow! I love the fabric you chose and the polka dot pillow looks terrific with it! I have a chair that really, really needs some love too but I've been too afraid to tackle it - now maybe I will :)
Thanks for the inspiration!

Jamie---this is just fabulous. Ticking was just made for that chair.

I'm very impressed with the job you did. Looks professional. Sewing the welting and stuff would have scared me into not doing it.

Okay, swoon doesn't even cover it! I have two chairs that I'm staring at (with disdain) right now that would look AMAZING if I got over my fears of upholstery and at least tried. Okay. Let's be clear. They would look amazing if YOU did them. Me? Probably mildly passable.
You are so talented, Jamie.

Wow! I am so glad to see this. I have two couches that I have been wanting to do and I had no clue about the thread or the needles to use. What a great idea to take pictures when taking it apart. I am getting a bit more courage now.
