Random Somethings:Spring, Nerds, Pioneer Woman, and Postcards

Some random bits of life lately:
Spring

It seems that spring is just around the corner! I know this because the snow is gone, the sun is shining, and we have eaten two bags of Cadbury mini eggs already. To celebrate springs arrival I took Max to the store to buy some seeds.

There really is nothing better than planting seeds with a 3 year old!

Nerds
As if the Cadbury mini eggs weren't enough,

I've been secretly finishing off a big box that Shane was given for his birthday. I let him have just a few and then hid the box.
I had forgotten how fun Nerds are to eat. Tart, sweet, and hard as rocks.
I make them fancy by pouring them into my little Martha Stewart bowls. Not because I like my snacks to be fancy, but because that way the kids don't come running to the sound of me shaking the nerds out of the box.

The bowl keeps things quiet.

Pioneer Woman
Okay so I am so late to this party.
I've got to be honest and say that when everyone in the blogosphere started writing about someone known as Pioneer Woman.
I wasn't interested.
They'd post about her recipes and how they stood in line for an hour and a half just to meet her.
I didn't get it.
They'd post about her love affair with a cowboy.
Cowboys? Um no thanks.
They'd post about making her cinnamon buns at Christmas.
I became mildly interested.

Then one night about a month ago I'd read yet another post referring to Pioneer Woman and decided I had to at least go and see what on earth this was all about.
I went. I started reading. I stayed up until 2:30am reading every word about how she fell in love with Marlboro Man. Until then, I really had no idea that real cowboys still existed.
I was hooked.
I ordered the cookbook and just finished reading every recipe.

I have a fridge full of butter.

I still haven't decided what to make first.

Any suggestions?

Postcards
We are excited about participating in the Great American Postcard Swap that is being organized by Aimee at Adventures and Pursuits.

Here's how it works. One family from each state agrees to send out postcards to one family from each of the 49 other states. So you send out 49 postcards and receive 49 postcards.
We have a map ready and are excited to learn a little bit about each of the states. Not to mention how exciting it will be to get those postcards in the mail each week!

Aimee is organizing 3 different postcard swaps and there are still states remaining in groups 2 and 3. In group 2 we still need families from the following states:
Delaware Kansas Kentucky New Hampshire North Dakota South Dakota West Virginia Wyoming
I think that the 3rd group has even more states open so if your family is interested in participating go visit Aimee's blog for more details!

I love PW as well!! And also spent way too long reading all her old posts, so funny!! I just made Marlboro Man's favorite sandwich last week, so yummy but now we need our arteries unclogged!! Had to eat salads for the rest of the week. I make her Eggs in a Hole for my kids all the time now, they love it.

I just got the book, too! I LOVE it. Surprisingly, I'd say try Edna Mae's Pancakes first! This is now my go-to pancake recipe! And if you use light sour cream and whole wheat flour (and cooking spray instead of butter) they taste great and aren't too bad for you (if you don't count the syrup!).

My suggestion is don't eat her mashed potatoes. Yuck! Other than that I've only made her clam linguine (you know, like she made on their first home cooked meal date?) and that's now a staple at my house.

Yeah was you go you know! She reigned me in about a year ago. I bought her cookbook a couple of months ago and read it through immediately. Rhoda at Southern Hospitality just posted today that she and some fellow bloggers have been invited to the ranch, she is so excited!! Can't say as I blame her. Blessings, Marla

I made her lasagna and it was so good! My husband loves it when I make the Steak bites from her blog. Never thought my husband would ask me to make steak as he is a grilling master.

WE love the chicken fried steak at our house! THe cinnamon rolls are amazing too. Her macaroni & cheese has also been a big hit (we add carmelized onions to it!)

I took forever to check her out too. I resisted until one day I saw her chocolate sheet cake (for the hundredth time) and for some reason I NEEDED it. (PMS?) It was fabulous and I have fallen hard for her.

What a great idea with the postcards - shame Wales isn't in the US or I could take part!
I just wanted to let you know that I love your blog and your home and have nominated you for a Beautiful Blogger award over on my blog.

Hi Jamie, I just found your blog and I had to let you know how inspired I am already. I have just read through your last few posts and already I am thinking that perhaps I could reupholster our old lounge and I that a personalised notebook cover would make the perfect gift for my friends daughter. I am looking forward to reading more. xx

I made the PW Cinnamon Rolls at Christmas, delivered a bunch to neighbors and still had plenty for us. They were so good! I've also tried a few of her other recipes from her website and they were pretty good...lasagna, flank steak marinade and Easy Monday Night Stirfry.

If you are a chips & salsa lover, I suggest you make her restraunt salsa, not even sure if it is in the book, but it has definately become a weekly staple in this house!
